On Monday evening, 9th November, the new year 7 gifted and talented group met each other for the first time.
Thinking outside the box and developing philosophical thought was the topic for the evening. After introductions they were taken back to Henry VIII’s England and looked at the imaginary world created by Sir Thomas More in the book, Utopia.
The students created two teams to develop their own Utopia, discussing ways in which people may or may not live harmoniously and what they might need to do or have in their world to keep the peace. Developing these critical skills further they then needed to question the other team over their new world policies, uncovering flaws and the other team defending their policies.
This led to the discussion that perhaps good would not exist if there was no bad. How might one assess what is good if there is nothing that is bad to compare it to?
Finally, they all left with a new challenge that they are going to pursue over the course of this next year.
